Happy Monday!  It's a new month, and we are happy to have been spared by Tropical Storm Isaias.  We're getting used to responding to major disruptions around here, but it's nice not to have to worry about a major storm for now.  It means we get to keep charging on, doing our best to keep our little market buzzing.

Just in time for this new month, and for National Farmers Market Week, we are thrilled to welcome Slow Turtle Farm back to the market.  Those of you who have been shopping with us for years will remember Carol and her incredible goat cheeses.  We were always overjoyed during kidding season, when Carol would bring baby goats to see us during the market.  A little over two years ago, Carol took a step back from markets to engage in the arduous process of becoming a USDA Grade A Dairy, which will allow her to do more with the products coming from her farm.  It's an incredibly overwhelming process, and is especially hard for small, independent farmstead dairies like Slow Turtle Farm.  After all this time of major sacrifices, piles of challenges, inspections, and more, Slow Turtle Farm is now certified and returning to markets.  We hope you'll join us in welcoming her back to the market family.

We also received the news this week that Fresh Access Bucks is expanding their unlimited matching program for SNAP/EBT and P-EBT shoppers. Thanks to this program, we will now be able to provide unlimited matching through the end of this year. Stop by the market HQ booth for more details!

07.20.2020 - At the Market Tonight

Use your District Dollars from the Audubon Park Garden District to purchase goods from every market vendor.

Use your District Dollars from the Audubon Park Garden District to purchase goods from every market vendor.

We checked the forecast: it's just as hot as you would expect it to be in Florida in July, but there's a 100% chance that we'll be there anyway, supporting local businesses and getting our local food for the week.

We talk a lot about how the selections change pretty drastically in the summer, especially when it comes to produce.  While we work hard to make sure as much variety as possible is available at the market, we stick to our commitment to bring you Florida-grown and Florida-made foods every week.   Sometimes the drop in produce availability can make it hard to imagine making it through the summer, but it's important to us to continue supporting all the businesses that power through these tough months, making their products available year-round.  We hope you'll join us in thanking our awesome vendors for sticking it out!

We’re still accepting District Dollars from the Audubon Park Garden District - if you have them, bring them on down! If you’re not familiar, check out this awesome program from our neighborhood Main Street organization. Details are available here. We also accept SNAP for all eligible items, and will continue to provide unlimited matching through the end of July. So if you’re shopping with SNAP, we’ll match your spending with Fresh Access Bucks, which will buy you Florida-grown fruits, vegetables, and edible plants/seeds. More details on that here.

Welcome back to Monday.  We're ready for our weekly dose of outdoor shopping, and this week we have a new (returning) vendor for you.  It's been quite a while since we've had Frog Song Organics at the market, but one of their newer team members is bringing it back tonight! 07.06.2020 - Rain or Shine at the Market Tonight

73309554_10157005294035899_4084940262737177349_o.jpg

Well, we made it to July, and it's a little hot and rainy.  That said, we're open rain or shine tonight, because farming and food production don't (usually) stop for the weather.  As with last week, most of the produce you'll see tonight will be in the form of tropical fruit, such as mangoes, papayas, and passion fruit, available from Second Breakfast and Live Food Experience.  Heart of Christmas Farm will be  bringing summer crops in from The Barefoot Farmer, including cucumbers and squashes.  And of course, microgreens and mushrooms are available year-round, thanks to indoor growers at Microganics and Nearby Naturals!   You'll also find prepared food options, including pickles, sauerkraut and kombucha from Orlando City Kombucha (featuring products from The Proper Pickle), jams and jellies, teas and tinctures.  Items have been selling out fast, so come early, or reach out to vendors about pre-ordering.

Azalea Acres Farm (Pastured Chicken and Eggs) and Wild Ocean Seafood are also year-round operations, and both offer pre-orders of their products to make it easier to support them through the season.

Don't forget there are plenty of dinner options to grab and take home - from the Bearded Vegan and Ceylon Hut.

We will continue to provide hand-washing facilities and will maintain a setup that allows for plenty of space between vendor booths.  We have masks and gloves on hand for anyone who needs them - just stop by the HQ booth and ask.  Please continue to limit to one party per booth at a time, and maintain a safe distance from your fellow shoppers.

We hope to see you at the market.

This intense summer heat is signaling a true transition in the seasonally available foods at the market.  This will be Winter Park Urban Farm's last market with us for a while, so today is a good day to stock up on some of those end-of-season crops from farmer Mason.  I've been freezing and preserving the harvest for the last few weeks in order to capture some of those seasonal flavors to get me through the summer.  Heart of Christmas Farm will continue to bring produce from The Barefoot Farmer, but you'll start to see less variety available.  This also means there will be more tropical fruit coming in, with mangoes, miracle fruit, passion fruit, and more available from Second Breakfast and Living Food Experience.

Take a break from cooking tonight and grab to-go meals and snacks from The Bearded Vegan, Ceylon Hut, and Avenue A Eatery.  There are plenty of options for vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores to pick up on the way out.

06.22.2020 - At the Market Tonight

It's Market Monday, and as of June 20th, there is a mask mandate in effect in Orange County.  These last 5 weeks, having the market open again has been an uplifting experience.  Our team feels much safer shopping in the outdoors, with plenty of room to social distance, from vendors who have thoughtfully and carefully produced their goods.  We feel very strongly that we are providing an essential service, both to our small business owners and our customers, and we're so glad to be back.

Some of our vendors are taking a step back from the market out of an abundance of caution in light of recent spike in COVID cases, and we totally understand and respect their decisions. It’s our hope that we can continue to demonstrate our efforts to maintain a safe environment, so that we have a market for them to come back to. We want to stick to our plan of staying open through all of this, but we need everyone’s help to make the market as safe and comfortable as possible for everyone involved.

It's important to us to do our part to keep these incredible small business owners healthy and in business, and for our shoppers to be safe, healthy, and able to eat well.  We hope you'll join us in our efforts to do so!

We hope to see you at the market.

With Gratitude,

Gabby Lothrop
Market Director

06.15.20 - At the Market Tonight

Produce from Winter Park Urban Farm

Produce from Winter Park Urban Farm

Summer is settling in and we're seeing many of our friends in the farming community starting to close down for the season.  We still have some fresh produce coming in from Winter Park Urban Farm, The Barefoot Farmer (via Heart of Christmas Farms), and Second Breakast, but you'll see that the selection has shifted to heat-friendly crops like peppers, eggplant, tropical spinaches, and smaller tomato varieties.  Now is a great time to get some tropical edibles going in your home garden, and you can pick up starter plants at the market, from vendors like Miller's Edible Garden and Second Breakfast.  If you're a SNAP shopper, you can use your benefit to purchase edible plants and seeds (along with all the other staples you already buy with SNAP), and you can use your Fresh Access Bucks for those purchases as well.  Stop by the HQ booth if you have any questions about how that works!

We hope to see you at the market.
