With everything that has been happening in the world around us, including in our community, it has been a real gift to reconnect with our awesome local food community these last few weeks.  We can hardly believe this is our fourth week back in operation.  I want to take the opportunity to thank our amazing vendors and shoppers for venturing out into this world each week in order to connect over local food.  It's important to have good ways to feed our community, and we're grateful to be one of the places where that can happen.  The market is open, rain or shine tonight, and we're looking forward to seeing all of you there.

With Gratitude,

06.01.20 - At the Market Tonight

aa48c103-bcd5-4fa1-9540-692add302fd5.jpg

Our hearts are hurting today.  As a community-minded operation that has been active for over 11 years, we've always been proud to play host to organizations, businesses, and shoppers from all walks of life and with an extraordinarily wide variety of personal and political beliefs.  As we prepare to open tonight, we cannot ignore what is happening around us, in our own community, and in communities across the country.  While our political actions as a market have always centered on the politics of food (Eating is a political act!), we are keenly aware that those politics are also a critical piece of the larger discussion of racial equality in this country.  Food is a human right, and so is life without fear.  We, as the market producers, stand with the protesters in demanding real and lasting systemic changes in this country.  We cannot ignore the unjust deaths of black people at the hands of police, of people in positions of power, because we believe that black lives matter.

The generally positive vibe at the market means we've never really felt the need to say this "out loud," but we're saying it now and we'll keep saying it: Our market is built on community and inclusivity.  We will not tolerate any racist behavior or hatred.  We're in the business of supporting the people who produce good, quality local food, by connecting them with the people who want and need the joy and nourishment it provides.  We think those connections are building blocks for a community that cares for one another.

Our little market is just a tiny fragment of all the things that are happening in our community today.  But we will be open, because we believe in feeding our community and it's what we do best.  We hope you'll join us in finding ways, every day, to contribute to your community, to support justice, and to strive to be anti-racist.

With Gratitude,

Gabby Lothrop
Market Director

05.25.20 - Rain or Shine at the Market Tonight

100471435_10156885316515899_8551416406166470656_n.jpg

We were thrilled to re-open last week, and are grateful to everyone for taking extra precautions to make it as safe and comfortable as possible to support local business.

Of course we don't love that it's raining today (but our gardens love it!), but we're sticking to the plan and setting up rain or shine.  So grab your umbrella and stock up on local goodies at the market!

Along with a smaller market, you'll see an updated layout, partly due to the expanded outdoor seating for Stardust, and partly to make it a little easier to social distance while shopping.  We'll be following county guidelines on mask use and social distancing, and are encouraging shoppers to follow them as well.  We are providing a handwashing station for guests and vendors to use as needed.  We're asking to limit one customer per booth at a time, in order to maintain safe social distance, and we ask that you treat the market as a grocery store and takeout counter.  Some vendors will be keeping the product visible but not touchable, and will safely package it for you.  We're not ready to bring back the communal tables and live music, but we look forward to the day that we can.

Please check with vendors about options for ordering for pickup or delivery.  Many of them already have those services in place, and others are working on making them available.  We will also be sharing that information online throughout this period.

And be sure to visit the Stardust walk-up window!  They'll be offering up a limited menu along with coffee, tea, cocktails and soft drinks.  Thank you for helping us to keep our first market back as safe as possible, and for continuing to support our community of incredible purveyors.

With Gratitude,

Gabby Lothrop
Market Director

03.16.2020 - Tonight's our Last Market for a While.

86970408_10156605798955899_7456065399109451776_n.jpg

We're Open Tonight.

Well, we made it to Monday, and the market is open tonight, with multiple measures aimed at protecting everyone's safety.  With things developing as quickly as they are, it's with heavy hearts that we share that this will likely be our last market for a while.  As a farmers market, we serve the roles of grocery store,  a pop-up cafe, an accelerator for small business, a support system for local purveyors, and proudly, a gathering for community.  It's the gathering part that's making this tough.

With that news, we're using this opportunity to to get some fresh produce and provisions to help get us through this time of social distancing.  We're asking that you'll join us in foregoing the "gathering part" (usually one of our favorite parts), and treat the market as a grocery store and takeout counter.  Below are some key details about tonight's market.

  • We have adjusted the layout to put more space in the aisles and more space between vendors.

  • We are asking to limit one customer per booth at a time.

  • We will not have any communal tables or high-tops for dining on site.  We ask that you purchase hot foods as takeout.

  • Disposable gloves will be provided to vendors (and as an option for shoppers).

  • A hand washing station will be available out in the market.

  • Vendors have been advised of precautionary measures, including frequent hand washing, cleaning of hard surfaces, and safe handling of food.

  • Please check with vendors about options for ordering for pickup or delivery.  Many of them already have those services in place, and others are working on making them available.  We will also be sharing that information online.

In a bit of a twist of irony, we are welcoming a new vendor to the market family tonight.  Winter Park Urban Farm will be joining us tonight with freshly-harvested produce that has only been handled by one person, Farmer Mason.  While we hate that this is the way he's getting started with us, we're grateful for the boost of healthy veggies at a time like this.  Please give him a warm welcome (but from a safe distance).

Thank you for continuing to support our community of incredible purveyors.

With Gratitude,

Gabby Lothrop
Market Director

Update about COVID19 (Novel Coronavirus) and the Market

86809684_10156605798040899_575162658567749632_n.jpg

We've been monitoring the COVID-19 situation closely, as I'm sure you all have.  At this time, we are NOT planning to close the market.  We believe if grocery stores are remaining open, we should also make an effort to stay open.  While we only represent a small segment of the local economy, it’s important to us to remain available as long as possible both for our local consumers and our producers, who are all small business owners. We have looked to what farmers markets throughout the country, including those in highly affected cities, are doing in light of this situation. After consulting with trusted partners and monitoring City of Orlando and CDC recommendations, we are taking the following precautionary measures:

1. We are asking any vendor or customer who is feeling sick or does not feel comfortable participating in the market to go ahead and skip it.  We will be publishing our vendor list each Monday morning to give you the most up-to-date information we can on who will be there.

2. We will be adjusting the market layout to put more space between vendors and widen the aisleways to make "social distance" easier for shoppers and vendors.

3. We will be providing gloves to market vendors, customers, and staff for the handling of money, tokens, and other items.

4.  We are adding a small handwashing station to supplement the facilities available inside Stardust, along with additional refuse containers.

6. For the time being, we are removing the communal seating.

7. We’re encouraging pre-orders whenever possible. Many of our vendors already take pre-orders, making it easier to drop by and make a quick pickup. This also helps vendors gauge how much to bring to market during these unpredictable times. Below is a list of our current vendors and how to get in touch with them to inquire about pre-ordering options. As we get more details, we’ll update this list:

We hope that we can continue serving local consumers and small business as we get through this time of uncertainty. Hope to see you (however briefly!) at the market.

Best,

Gabby Lothrop, Market Director

86788734_10156605799155899_3395988236735086592_n.jpg

Happy March!  We made it to a new month, and we're excited as always to roll out some of our favorite local purveyors at tonight's market.  Tonight we have some old friends popping up, so it's going to be extra special.  R&B Organics is making an appearance with some of Farmer Dan's fresh-picked produce, straight from the farm in Melbourne.  And the awesome girls of Semilla Nativa are popping up!  We've missed them since they relocated to Miami, and we're excited that they are able to join us for tonight's market. We missed their vegan pestos and gluten-free savory baked goods.

We're also happy to announce that after a few weeks on hiatus, Purgatory will be back tonight to add their yummy vegan food to the mix. And Thrown by Hand will be making their monthly appearance with functional pottery to serve all your delicious market finds on!

Hope to see you at the market!

Cheers,

We're on a mission to make Monday better with lots of yummy local food and more at the market tonight.  Miller's Edible Plants is back after a long hiatus, offering up fresh produce and edible plant starters for your home garden.  Ready or Knots is also here for a popup this week with planter hangers, houseplants, and other handmade goods. Oralba Shoes will also be on site, with handcrafted shoes designed and made by an artist.

We're also happy to report that Black Cat Baked Goods is bringing back english muffins this week - scoop them up early; they sell out every time!  All that and much more await you at tonight's market.
