This intense summer heat is signaling a true transition in the seasonally available foods at the market.  This will be Winter Park Urban Farm's last market with us for a while, so today is a good day to stock up on some of those end-of-season crops from farmer Mason.  I've been freezing and preserving the harvest for the last few weeks in order to capture some of those seasonal flavors to get me through the summer.  Heart of Christmas Farm will continue to bring produce from The Barefoot Farmer, but you'll start to see less variety available.  This also means there will be more tropical fruit coming in, with mangoes, miracle fruit, passion fruit, and more available from Second Breakfast and Living Food Experience.

Take a break from cooking tonight and grab to-go meals and snacks from The Bearded Vegan, Ceylon Hut, and Avenue A Eatery.  There are plenty of options for vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores to pick up on the way out.

We will continue to provide hand-washing facilities and will maintain a setup that allows for plenty of space between vendor booths.  We have masks and gloves on hand for anyone who needs them - just stop by the HQ booth and ask.  Please continue to limit to one party per booth at a time, and maintain a safe distance from your fellow shoppers.

We hope to see you at the market.

With Gratitude,

Gabby Lothrop
Market Director

It's Market Monday, and as of June 20th, there is a mask mandate in effect in Orange County.  These last 5 weeks, having the market open again has been an uplifting experience.  Our team feels much safer shopping in the outdoors, with plenty of room to social distance, from vendors who have thoughtfully and carefully produced their goods.  We feel very strongly that we are providing an essential service, both to our small business owners and our customers, and we're so glad to be back.

Some of our vendors are taking a step back from the market out of an abundance of caution in light of recent spike in COVID cases, and we totally understand and respect their decisions. It’s our hope that we can continue to demonstrate our efforts to maintain a safe environment, so that we have a market for them to come back to. We want to stick to our plan of staying open through all of this, but we need everyone’s help to make the market as safe and comfortable as possible for everyone involved.

It's important to us to do our part to keep these incredible small business owners healthy and in business, and for our shoppers to be safe, healthy, and able to eat well.  We hope you'll join us in our efforts to do so!

We hope to see you at the market.

With Gratitude,

Gabby Lothrop
Market Director

Produce from Winter Park Urban Farm

Produce from Winter Park Urban Farm

Summer is settling in and we're seeing many of our friends in the farming community starting to close down for the season.  We still have some fresh produce coming in from Winter Park Urban Farm, The Barefoot Farmer (via Heart of Christmas Farms), and Second Breakast, but you'll see that the selection has shifted to heat-friendly crops like peppers, eggplant, tropical spinaches, and smaller tomato varieties.  Now is a great time to get some tropical edibles going in your home garden, and you can pick up starter plants at the market, from vendors like Miller's Edible Garden and Second Breakfast.  If you're a SNAP shopper, you can use your benefit to purchase edible plants and seeds (along with all the other staples you already buy with SNAP), and you can use your Fresh Access Bucks for those purchases as well.  Stop by the HQ booth if you have any questions about how that works!

We hope to see you at the market.

With everything that has been happening in the world around us, including in our community, it has been a real gift to reconnect with our awesome local food community these last few weeks.  We can hardly believe this is our fourth week back in operation.  I want to take the opportunity to thank our amazing vendors and shoppers for venturing out into this world each week in order to connect over local food.  It's important to have good ways to feed our community, and we're grateful to be one of the places where that can happen.  The market is open, rain or shine tonight, and we're looking forward to seeing all of you there.

06.01.20 - At the Market Tonight

aa48c103-bcd5-4fa1-9540-692add302fd5.jpg

Our hearts are hurting today.  As a community-minded operation that has been active for over 11 years, we've always been proud to play host to organizations, businesses, and shoppers from all walks of life and with an extraordinarily wide variety of personal and political beliefs.  As we prepare to open tonight, we cannot ignore what is happening around us, in our own community, and in communities across the country.  While our political actions as a market have always centered on the politics of food (Eating is a political act!), we are keenly aware that those politics are also a critical piece of the larger discussion of racial equality in this country.  Food is a human right, and so is life without fear.  We, as the market producers, stand with the protesters in demanding real and lasting systemic changes in this country.  We cannot ignore the unjust deaths of black people at the hands of police, of people in positions of power, because we believe that black lives matter.

The generally positive vibe at the market means we've never really felt the need to say this "out loud," but we're saying it now and we'll keep saying it: Our market is built on community and inclusivity.  We will not tolerate any racist behavior or hatred.  We're in the business of supporting the people who produce good, quality local food, by connecting them with the people who want and need the joy and nourishment it provides.  We think those connections are building blocks for a community that cares for one another.

Our little market is just a tiny fragment of all the things that are happening in our community today.  But we will be open, because we believe in feeding our community and it's what we do best.  We hope you'll join us in finding ways, every day, to contribute to your community, to support justice, and to strive to be anti-racist.

With Gratitude,

Gabby Lothrop
Market Director

05.25.20 - Rain or Shine at the Market Tonight

100471435_10156885316515899_8551416406166470656_n.jpg

We were thrilled to re-open last week, and are grateful to everyone for taking extra precautions to make it as safe and comfortable as possible to support local business.

Of course we don't love that it's raining today (but our gardens love it!), but we're sticking to the plan and setting up rain or shine.  So grab your umbrella and stock up on local goodies at the market!

Along with a smaller market, you'll see an updated layout, partly due to the expanded outdoor seating for Stardust, and partly to make it a little easier to social distance while shopping.  We'll be following county guidelines on mask use and social distancing, and are encouraging shoppers to follow them as well.  We are providing a handwashing station for guests and vendors to use as needed.  We're asking to limit one customer per booth at a time, in order to maintain safe social distance, and we ask that you treat the market as a grocery store and takeout counter.  Some vendors will be keeping the product visible but not touchable, and will safely package it for you.  We're not ready to bring back the communal tables and live music, but we look forward to the day that we can.

Please check with vendors about options for ordering for pickup or delivery.  Many of them already have those services in place, and others are working on making them available.  We will also be sharing that information online throughout this period.

And be sure to visit the Stardust walk-up window!  They'll be offering up a limited menu along with coffee, tea, cocktails and soft drinks.  Thank you for helping us to keep our first market back as safe as possible, and for continuing to support our community of incredible purveyors.

With Gratitude,

Gabby Lothrop
Market Director

Well, it’s been 2 weeks since our last market, and we are really missing our weekly gathering with our awesome local food community. Due to a combination factors (safety concerns, limited resources, etc), the market will continue to be closed at this time. Our team will continue to look for ways to bring back the market while still appeasing both vendor and customer concerns, but in the meantime, we want you to know there are still ways to connect with the awesome local producers and purchase products and food from them. Until we can reconvene at Stardust on a Monday night, we’ll be dreaming of the good days and using these alternative options!

Below is a list of our current vendors (along with some recent vendors) and how to get in touch with them to inquire about pre-ordering, delivery, and pop-up options. As we get more details, we’ll update this list:

  • Avenue A Eatery: Contact information available at www.avenueaeatery.com

  • Azalea Acres Farm has teamed up with Keely Farms Dairy for deliveries of chicken, pork, beef, and raw dairy products. They may be partnering with local produce farmers to include veggie boxes in the near future.

    • Visit www.keelyfarmsdairy.com for ordering information and delivery schedules.

  • The Barefoot Farmer (Tomazin Farms) is working with the Farmacy to provide produce at the Farm Store at Lake Meadow Naturals Farm.

  • The Bearded Vegan: Still delivering Patties and Sea Moss products around town.

  • Black Cat Baked Goods: Angela is delivering bread weekly, with contact-free payment and delivery. Follow her on social media for details, and DM your order by 11 am Tuesday for Wednesday Delivery.

We hope that we can continue serving local consumers and small business as we get through this time of uncertainty. We cannot wait to see everyone again, in one place, when things are better.

03.16.2020 - Tonight's our Last Market for a While.

We're Open Tonight.

Well, we made it to Monday, and the market is open tonight, with multiple measures aimed at protecting everyone's safety.  With things developing as quickly as they are, it's with heavy hearts that we share that this will likely be our last market for a while.  As a farmers market, we serve the roles of grocery store,  a pop-up cafe, an accelerator for small business, a support system for local purveyors, and proudly, a gathering for community.  It's the gathering part that's making this tough.

With that news, we're using this opportunity to to get some fresh produce and provisions to help get us through this time of social distancing.  We're asking that you'll join us in foregoing the "gathering part" (usually one of our favorite parts), and treat the market as a grocery store and takeout counter.  Below are some key details about tonight's market.

  • We have adjusted the layout to put more space in the aisles and more space between vendors.

  • We are asking to limit one customer per booth at a time.

  • We will not have any communal tables or high-tops for dining on site.  We ask that you purchase hot foods as takeout.

  • Disposable gloves will be provided to vendors (and as an option for shoppers).

  • A hand washing station will be available out in the market.

  • Vendors have been advised of precautionary measures, including frequent hand washing, cleaning of hard surfaces, and safe handling of food.

  • Please check with vendors about options for ordering for pickup or delivery.  Many of them already have those services in place, and others are working on making them available.  We will also be sharing that information online.

In a bit of a twist of irony, we are welcoming a new vendor to the market family tonight.  Winter Park Urban Farm will be joining us tonight with freshly-harvested produce that has only been handled by one person, Farmer Mason.  While we hate that this is the way he's getting started with us, we're grateful for the boost of healthy veggies at a time like this.  Please give him a warm welcome (but from a safe distance).

Thank you for continuing to support our community of incredible purveyors.

With Gratitude,

Gabby Lothrop
Market Director
